Prof. Yoram Reich is a researcher of engineering design and systems engineering.

He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BSc and Cum Laude with an MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering from Aviv University. From 1980 to 1986, he served as an officer in the Navy. In 1986, he won the Rothschild Foundation and the Fulbright Foundation Fellowships for doctoral studies and completed it in Civil Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in the USA in 1991. From 1991 to 1993, he was a visiting researcher at the Institute for Research in Engineering Design at Carnegie Mellon University and in the Department of Civil Engineering at Duke University. In 1993, he joined the faculty of the Faculty of Engineering, School of Mechanical Engineering at the university, and has been a full professor since 2007.

From 1996-2000, he served as a board member of the Israeli chapter of the International Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME Chapter 319) and from 1998-1999 as the chapter's chairman.

From 2009-2021, he served as a member of the advisory board of the  Design Society. He founded and served as co-chair of the Society's Design Theory Interest Group from 2008-2014.

He serves as editor-in-chief of a leading international journal in engineering design research (Research in Engineering Design) and as senior editor and an editorial board member of eight additional scientific journals and a member of numerous international conference committees on computing and design in engineering.

In 2012, he founded the Israel Institute for Empowering Innovation, with several other partners from academia and industry, to advance engineering education in Israel, and serves as president and chairman of the institute's board of directors.

In 2014, he was elected a Fellow of the International Design Research Society.

In 2018, he founded the Systems Engineering Research Initiative with partners and is heading it. He is also an entrepreneur with partners and heads the master's program with a thesis in systems engineering at the university.

In 2021, he was elected Honorary Fellow of the Israeli Society of Systems Engineering - INCOSE-IL

In 2023, he was elected a Fellow of the Design Society. 

In 2023, he was appointed Chair of Engineering Design and Systems Engineering at Tel Aviv University.

 

Research and Publications

Prof Reich is one of the leading researchers in design and systems engineering in Israel. He published more than 250 publications in this and related areas.

In addition, he co-authored three books and co-edited a fourth; one on managing dynamic product development processes in 2011, one on biomimicry in 2016, and one on design in 2020. The last book on sustainable and ecological communities appeared in 2023.
