Harnessing Curiosity:  Tools & Insights for Educational Advancement

Pnina Klein, Tel-Aviv University Advisor: : Prof. Goren Gordon (TAU)

Abstract:

Curiosity is a fundamental trait that influences various aspects of human development. It has been linked to creative thinking, productive learning, academic achievement and emotional well-being. In this talk I will briefly present three studies conducted to learn more about the contextual environment that influences and fosters curiosity. The first study examines the longitudinal effects of early-age attachment on adolescent curiosity and its subsequent impact on tendencies towards both negative and positive risk-taking behaviors. In the second study, we assess the curiosity of elementary school children as reported by their parents and teachers. Using a holistic approach, we explore the correlations between the children's reported curiosity and the self-reported curiosity of the parents and teachers. The third preliminary study involves the development and testing of quantitative curiosity measurement tools in two elementary schools in Israel. We demonstrate how specific behavioral measures correlate with various aspects of a child's curiosity, establishing a foundation for future research in this field.
