Message from Department Chair

Prof. Amit Kohn

The structure and curriculum of the young Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Tel Aviv University offer unique educational programs for undergraduates and postgraduates. The core members of the department devote all their time to research and study of materials science and engineering. Additionally, there are ten affiliated members that belong to other units in the Faculty of Engineering (Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering), the Faculty of Exact Sciences (Chemistry and Physics), and the Faculty of Life Sciences. These faculties are members of the Council of the Department, and they contribute to the development of multidisciplinary research. This variety of departments is unique to Tel Aviv University resulting in a culture of cooperation between faculties on campus, which allows our students to be at the forefront of multidisciplinary science and technology. The department is a pioneer in appointing a distinguished International Advisory Committee, consisted of leading scientists in the field of materials from prestigious institutions. The role of this committee is to help us ensure that our curriculum is modern and comparable to one of those prestigious institutions around the world and that our research areas and the faculty we recruit remain at the cutting edge of science and engineering.

We offer BSc programs that have been approved by Israel's Council for Higher Education. The dual MS&E-Chemistry BSc program has been constructed and is managed in close collaboration with the School of Chemistry in the Faculty of Exact Sciences. The School of Chemistry enjoys a high reputation and prestige thanks to a combination of excellence in research and teaching. Its staff members have won important prizes in Israel. The purpose of this undergraduate program is to train future engineers and researchers with good foundations in basic science and the high-quality scientific vision required in the modern technological world. Our comprehensive curriculum (8-9 semesters) provides our training students with a comparative advantage in R&D and in manufacturing.

We also offer MSc and Ph.D. graduate programs. Our faculty members are leading scholars in their research fields and have won prestigious international awards. They have various collaborations with academic institutions and research laboratories abroad, and with national industry and security organizations. Our labs are equipped with state-of-the-art instruments. We believe in education for excellence and achievement. Students under the guidance of our faculty members have won numerous awards, including the Israel Security Award, the Chief of Staff Award, the Women in Science Award, the Society for Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering (SAMPE) award, awards for outstanding presentations at international conferences, and more.

You will find a young and vibrant department in which you will learn in a warm and supportive atmosphere, and you will enjoy living in Tel Aviv, 'the city that never sleeps'. I invite you to join us, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Tel Aviv University!
