EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF INSTABILITY OF STRATIFIED TWO-PHASE FLOW IN RECTANGULAR DUCTS

Yakov Nezihovski

Under supervision of Prof. Alexander Gelfgat

This work is devoted to an experimental investigation of the onset of instability in two-phase flows in a rectangular duct. The onset of instability inside the duct is characterized by a change from stratified to wavy flow. Experiments were made in a rectangular duct, in which air and water are flowing at the atmospheric pressure. The superficial velocities at which an unstable wavy flow regime sets in were found. The waves frequency at the critical superficial velocities were measured by a digital analysis of a laser beam spot created after the laser beam crosses both liquids and the interface. Measurements were made at various holdups ranging from 0.2 to 0.6. To maintain a constant holdup, a superficial velocities ratio was kept unchanged by a specially designed mechanical system.

Results of these experiments were compared with the recent numerical predictions. It was found that the experimental and numerical results are close, which validates the previously published computationally obtained stability diagrams.
