Improving the design of systems using computer-aided conceptual modelling

Avi Shaked

serves as a senior research associate at the University of Oxford's

Department of Computer Science

Our world constantly evolves, resulting in an increasingly complex web of systems and knowledge. Modelling is an important abstraction technique that allows to communicate designs and reason about systems. However, the conceptual modelling of systems is still typically approached using undisciplined techniques, often lacking research foundations. In this talk, I will first overview some of the drawbacks and limitations of traditional conceptual modelling. Then, I will discuss how model-driven engineering can help to address the limitations and improve the rigor of conceptual modelling, specifically with respect to methodological reasoning and sustaining the models as viable artifacts. This will be demonstrated by applications for Security by Design and for Development Process Design. Underlying principles for effective computer-assisted conceptual modelling will be highlighted, providing guidance for potential applications in other research domains as well as for identifying gaps in some state-of-the-art conceptual modelling approaches (such as Object Process Methodology / ISO-19450). Finally, I will outline potential research directions to improve the design and operation of systems, while relating to technical elements that heavily rely on technological implementations, as well as to nontechnical elements that focus on social, organisational and human aspects.

Avi Shaked serves as a senior research associate at the University of Oxford's Department of Computer Science, researching adaptations and applications of automated reasoning for securing systems by design. Dr. Shaked earned his BSc degree in physics and computer science, followed by an MSc degree in physics, and ultimately, a PhD in systems engineering, all from Tel Aviv University. He has over 15 years of experience in research and development leadership roles. His research interests include systems thinking, domain specific modelling, model-based design, security and engineering management.
