Professor Mark Beran

Professor Mark Beran

The Faculty of Engineering is sorry to report that Professor Emeritus Mark Biran passed away on August 6, 2013. Mark was one of the founders of the faculty, which he joined in the early seventies, and where he taught and conducted his research until his retirement at the end of the 1990s. Mark laid the foundations for the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, and served as the Head of the department in its early years. This department has become a source of innovative ideas and the habitat of two unique departments which eventually emerged from it: the Department of Physical Electronics and the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Throughout the years, Mark had been involved in the recruitment of excellent academic faculty, who proved as prominent scientists both in their field of specialty and among faculty leaders. He taught generations of undergraduate and graduate students, and two of his Ph.D. students gained international scientific recognition and became leading faculty members in various universities in Israel. Mark was indeed a pioneer in his field – Wave Theory, as well as in other areas such as Optics and Acoustics. His scientific achievements, alongside his radiant personality, contributed considerably to enhance the prestige and reputation of both the Faculty and the University.
