The field of lasers and electro-optic devices is based on fundamental scientific principles and has demonstrated a large variety of applications, among which many of them are met in our everyday lives. The laser is by itself a striking example. Being invented more than 50 years ago, it attracted first interest as a basic physical phenomenon. It was established that a configuration comprising optical elements and materials, can produce light with exceptional qualities in terms of spectral purity, spatial coherence and brightness. Nowadays, half a century after its invention, we meet laser-based devices almost everywhere: at the stores' counters, in data storage devices, music players and surgery clinics and at the light and heavy industry production lines.

At the same time with the development of the laser a great deal of effort was spent in the development of photonic devices based to a great extent upon laser radiation. A notorious field of applications for electro-optic devices is that of optical communication. Most of the data traffic nowadays (internet, visual and voice) is carried-out by optical fibers. Light there is generated by sub-millimeter size lasers, and the information is modulated on the light carriers by wave guiding devices of sizes of microns and less. Wave-guided devices are deployed also in the detection and processing of information in the optical carrier. Electro-optic devices are been implemented also for environmental and biological sensing.

Prof. Shlomo Ruschin has been involved in the research of lasers and electro-optical devices from early stages of his professional career. In the framework of his M.Sc. studies he built one of the first reported high-power gas lasers. During his Ph.D. studies he investigated quantum aspects of optics theory and during his post-doctorate studies at Cornell he discovered several effects regarding compound lased systems. After joining the Academic Staff at Tel-Aviv University he established a research team and lab for the development of advanced photonic devices, with emphasis on design and fabrication capabilities, the emphasis being on functional waveguide devices.
